The Final Week

After much prodding, I’m finally updating the blog.  Things have just been too busy around here to find the time.  We move out of our apartment in Maryland in about a week and, unfortunately, we really haven’t started packing yet.  Over the last few weeks we’ve had to find a place to live in Atlanta, prepare for the move, sign all the contracts and pay the deposits on the new place, close out our stuff here, and figure out a time line for the move.  Thankfully, that all seems completed, so now we can focus on finishing our last week here before moving on.  Andy has one more week of his rotation and tons of work to do in that time, so he will be incredibly busy this week.  I’ve been working hard, while trying to get a handle on the packing situation (at least conceptualizing where things will go).  We’ve moved around so much by now, it seems like old hat so we aren’t stressing too much…. yet.

We couldn’t be more excited about our new townhouse in Atlanta, though.  After many evenings of looking at house, condo, and townhouse listings we narrowed our search down, in large part to our amazing realtor, Karen Smyth.  She has been so helpful to us throughout the whole process and never treated us as second-class clients because we’re renters.  She’s knowledgeable, thorough, and working with her has been a really great experience.  I couldn’t recommend her any more highly (if anyone knows someone in need of a realtor in Atlanta, I have the best one!).  Finally, we’ll have enough space to actually have “our things” back, enough space to let the cats run around, and enough space for our expanding family.  We’ll be able to have visitors again and entertain, two things we always used to do all the time but haven’t been able to in recent years.  We love the neighborhood (it’ll be nice to be in an area safe enough for me to feel comfortable running errands alone!) and we love that we’ll still be within driving distance of many of our closest friends.  We’re excited to start our time in Atlanta and actually be there for at least a year.  After looking over all the places we’ve lived in the last 7 years, Andy and I realized we’ve never been anywhere longer than 18 months (which was a really sad discovery), so staying in one place for a year is really exciting for us.

But before we can move, we have to get through this week, pack our stuff, drive to Nashville and spend a few days there, catching up with friends, packing up all of our stuff from the upstairs and the basement of Andy’s parents’ house, and attending a baby shower being thrown for us (which we’re vey much looking forward to).  I’m right about 24 weeks pregnant now, just around the corner from the third trimester.  I’m quite noticeably pregnant and it seems that the morning sickness has finally gone away.  Even my maternity clothes barely fit these days because all the weight I’ve gained has concentrated itself in front of me.  But, I’ll take it since I don’t look fat or pregnant from the back, at least.  I’m starting to get a little uncomfortable; it’s weird not being able to do things that used to be so easy, like bending over, or getting up off the ground unaided, or sleeping comfortably through the night.

And so our time in Maryland is coming to a close and I can’t say we’ll miss it all that much.  While there were some things we liked about the DC area (especially seeing Greg), Maryland is definitely not the place for us.  We’re excited to give Atlanta a try next!

Everything and Nothing

What have we been up to? Everything and nothing.  We both have been working like crazy – Andy is sometimes at the hospital up to 55 hours a week and the early part of the month is always my busiest. We still haven’t seen as much of DC as we’d like because once the weekend comes around, we’re so exhausted we don’t want to do anything or go anywhere.  At least it’s football season now so we have something to occupy our time when we’re feeling lazy on our weekends off.  And even though this was a terrible weekend of football, we still like being able to relax, scream at the TV, and spend some quality time together.  We have also been searching for a place to live in Atlanta, which is a huge and overwhelming task, but hopefully it will all pay off with a great, comfortable place to live in about 8 weeks.

I had my 16 week checkup a few weeks ago and it was terribly anti-climactic.  I flew to Nashville for the day (Which is always incredibly stressful – and my blood pressure showed that) to meet with my Ob/Gyn.  They listened to the heartbeat, measured my uterus, and pretty much sent me on my way.  They said everything looked great, but I left the office feeling… unfulfilled.  I think the average person goes to the doctor and wants to hear the words from the doctor or nurse that everything is great, but not me.  I want details.  I want test results and specific details.  I want to know exactly what tests they’re running with the gallon of blood they yanked out of my arm (okay, not a gallon, but it was far more than I’ve ever given before).  Since I’ve been helping Andy study for the last two years, I’ve picked up a lot of medical knowledge, so I have come to expect a certain type of treatment at the doctor’s office.  When Andy comes with me to my appointments, he asks lots of questions and asks for details, but since he couldn’t accompany me I was left with a lot of smiles and “looks great” comments from sympathetic nurses, but no substance.  Oh well, perhaps next time I’ll be able to gleam a little more information about our unborn child.  As far as symptoms, I feel okay most of the time but still have some occasional morning sickness, which is absolutely miserable.  I am definitely still dealing with fatigue, but it’s a lot easier to get through a full workday and normal chores now.  I get to the gym about 4 times a week still and have been doing prenatal pilates to stay healthy.

The weather is finally cooling down a little bit and we are loving the cooler temperatures.  Remember, we haven’t experienced autumn since 2006, so it’s wonderful to wear long sleeves and not be sweating as soon as we leave the house.  Winter may be somewhat less pleasant and a bit shocking to our systems, which have been acclimated to the tropics for a long time, but fall will be lovely. All in all, things are going well for us here in DC.  Hopefully, we’ll have something slightly more interesting to report in the next few days/weeks.

The First Washington, D.C. Pictures

After being here nearly a week, we finally were able to escape our (very nice) apartment to see some of Washington.  Since we’re only about a 25-30 minute metro ride from places like the Mall, the White House, and many other important  sights, we really want to make the most of our time here.  Since we only had a few hours free this evening after work (before our fantasy football draft!), we just made a quick trip to the Mall/Smithsonian area.  We took a few pictures of the Capitol and Washington Monument before wandering past some of the museums (trying to pick which ones we want to revisit further).  Then we walked over to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue because Andy had never seen the White House in any of his three trips to Washington.  Since I haven’t been to DC since I was very young, I couldn’t tell you if I’d ever seen the White House, though I know my mom and dad would be able to say.  All I remember from my early trips here were giant pandas, being cold (was it February?), and Chris liking the Air and Space Museum.  Since I’m going to Knoxville to be in my best friend’s wedding this weekend (and Andy’s on call Friday and Sunday), there won’t be time for exploring this weekend, but we both have the entire weekend off next week, so we’re looking forward to trips to the Natural History Museum and the Zoo to start with.  Take a look at these first few pictures of our apartment and the sights we were able to visit today.  Admittedly, there’s not much, but there will be more to come!

News and Updates for June 2009

Much has happened since our Europe trip, but there has been little time to stop and think about it all, let alone blog about it.  I’ll try to sort it all out now.

First, Andy was finally able to schedule his core rotations, so we can now plan for the next year of our lives.  Thank goodness!  Even more, we are actually happy about where we’re going (way to go, Ross)!  From mid-August until the end of October, we will be in suburban Maryland, just outside Washington, DC.  While we’re a little uncertain about the housing situation (and finding someplace safe, inexpensive, and relatively close to the hospital), we’re going to DC in a few weeks to check out some housing options.  DC is a fun city though and we have a lot of close friends who live there, so we’re looking forward to this experience.  I haven’t been to DC since I was really little, so it’ll be nice to go back.  Then, from mid-November until at least mid-June of next year, we’ll be living in Atlanta.  We are very excited about being able to do the majority of Andy’s core rotations so close to home!  Atlanta is also a really fun city and we already have a pretty good knowledge of the area, so for once, things seem to be going our way in the living situation.

Then, Andy got a new truck… sort of.  His grandaddy just sold his trailer, so he didn’t need his big truck to pull it anymore, so he asked if Andy wanted it.  Of course, Andy said yes, so he is now the proud (a little too proud, if you ask me) owner of a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi affectionately called “Thundertruck.”  It’s enormous (I have to jump in order to get in it), loud, but surprisingly, doesn’t get too bad gas mileage, all things considered.  He absolutely loves it, so we can now both say that we own “grown up cars” that we are really happy with.

Gross!

More recently was Andy’s bicycle accident.  The tires on his bike were completely bald and he skidded on a wet patch of pavement on the Brentwood bike trail early this morning.  I’ll tell you, the last phone call I want to get when I’m working involves the words “find the hydrogen peroxide” and “we’re going to need some gauze… lots of gauze.”  He’s okay, no broken bones and it could have been so much worse (thank goodness for riding gloves and helmets), but there are some deep abrasions that keep oozing (it’s really gross – pictures to come).  The bike is in the shop now getting some new tires, so hopefully this won’t be a problem again.

So for now, we’re just trying to enjoy our last six weeks in Nashville before moving again, planning for the next big move, and spending some time together.  The countdown has begun…
