Welcome to the Herda-Site. What began as a simple blog for our families detailing our 16 month experience on the Caribbean island of Dominica at the beginning of medical school has turned into so much more. It has become a sounding board of our thoughts and ideas, an immediate connection to family and friends, and an easy method of self-expression has sprung from the ashes of our old blog.
Andy is a doctor! FINALLY! He’s in his residency at UT’s Family Medicine program. Courtney works as a Search Engine Marketing Analyst for E.W. Scripps, managing the search engine marketing efforts of the clients of 9 Scripps newspapers and one agency. We were nomads for a while but are thrilled to have set down glorious, wonderful, joy-filled roots in Knoxville. Enjoy our blog posts and stories, Andy’s music, Courtney’s photography, the videos we’ve accumulated, and much more!
About Us: We met at Vanderbilt and started dating in October of 2002. We were married in 2006, lived as medical school nomads from 2007-2011 and had an amazing son in 2010. We live in Knoxville and love it (and can’t believe how much we love it).
Interests: My husband, my son, my family, and friends are most important. I love my Kindle, reading, vacations, Europe, speaking French, international relations, cooking (when I have time) and luxury goods. Reading really good writing gives me chills… and I devour books. I’m a diehard Vanderbilt fan and I have a weakness for expensive handbags. I love Starbucks and I consider San Francisco my home away from home. I also have developed a fondness for football, particularly the Chicago Bears, who sport a roster for five ex-Vanderbilt players!
Current Activities: Search Engine Marketing. Being a Wife and Mom. Working off the baby weight with my amazeballs personal trainer. Trying to update the blog and figure out what’s next in my life.
Favorite Places to Visit: San Francisco, Paris, Los Angeles, London, PARIS. And then Paris again.
Favorite Books: Romance novels. Good ones. I adore them despite the fact that I get made fun of for reading them. Well written YA novels: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Golden Compass trilogy, anything Madeleine L’engle EVER wrote, Harry Potter. The poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. Les Lais of Marie de France and a few of the French novels I worked my way through in grad school. Jane Austen, Shakespeare, etc. My least favorite book is Tess of the D’Urbervilles. It’s total crap and I’m still mad my 11th grade English teacher made us read it.
Interests: My Wife, my son, my cats, music, guitar, drums, bass, video games, computers, football, skiing, anything you do on the water, traveling, shopping, life, the universe, and everything. Riding trains.
Current Activities: Working all the time, exploring, using my Droid and my Motorola Xoom tablet. I’d like my activities to include going to the pool, the beach, but I pretty much just work all the time.
Favorite Places to Visit: Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Longboat Key, Orlando, DC, Prague, Lago di Garda, Venice, Innsbruck, Atlanta, my grandparents’ farms in West Tennessee, anywhere on a boat.

At the Disco, Fallout Boy, Plain White T’s, The Killers, Ozma, My Chemical Romance, Chris Cornell, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Zwan, Vertical Horizon, Jeff Miller, The Fray, Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Blink-182, Incubus, Goo Goo Dolls, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Eve-6, Simple Plan, Yellowcard, Brad Paisley, Foreigner, The Eagles, Peter Frampton, Jimmy Buffet, Frank Sinatra, Phil Collins, Genesis.
