There Will Be Updates!

Give me a day or two to get the house back to normal working order after two weeks of holidays, visitors (11 in all), presents, food, etc. There are pictures to be uploaded and more than a few stories to tell. Sure, I updated the blog more often in Dominica, but that’s because there was nothing else to do at the end of the day. When your mom, brother, nephew, in-laws, and more are all around, there’s typically something better to do! Be on the lookout – hopefully there will be new things by tomorrow!

November Recap
One of our Christmas Photos from 2009 (FYI I'm 6 months pregnant in the picture)

One of our Christmas Photos from 2009 (FYI I'm 6 months pregnant in the picture)

Several people have brought it to my attention that I have been a bit lacking in blog posts as of late.  I can assure you it isn’t laziness that has kept me from posting, or a lack of things about which to write, but rather a complete lack of time and energy to actually sit down and start writing.  The last post I wrote talked about the deer who hit me and the big move, which was now about five weeks ago.  Since then things have settled only slightly.  While many of our previous moves only took us 3 days to completely unpack all our boxes, this one has taken considerably longer for a number of reasons.  First, the house is 3 times as big as anywhere else we’ve lived recently, and thus has at least 3 times as much furniture and “stuff” to fill it with.  I’m also 3 times as big as I used to be… well, that’s quite an exaggeration, but I certainly feel 3 times as big.  At this point, I’m about 7.5 months pregnant and quite substantial in my girth.  That means no moving heavy objects and I get pretty tired pretty quickly.  Also, those of you who know me well know that I have T-Rex arms (thanks for that, Daddy), and with this big baby belly in the way, I can barely reach things like dishes in the sink, shelves above the dryer, etc.  Andy thinks it’s pretty funny and I’m sure if it were anyone but me, I’d think it was funny, too.

Nevertheless, we are finally at a point now where I feel like we are completely settled (barring a few cosmetic things).   We have removed the last of the trash and recycling from the garage so a car could actually fit in it (though Andy’s truck still does not fit in the garage, sadly).  We have started a workout routine at our gym, which is the most consistent we have been about going to the gym since we lived in Miami.  We absolutely love our gym and anyone in Atlanta that needs a gym should consider Ravinia Club.  Riley’s room finally has some furniture in it, although it does look somewhat spartan as of now.  But at least there’s a crib and a hutch and a chair as opposed to a big empty room with a few books on the floor.  The cats seem very happy to have all this space to run around and we often hear them running up and down the stairs chasing each other and bringing us their toys.  We’ve run into a few issues that come with home ownership (though we’re renting) like clogged drains and squirrels in the attic, but we’re dealing with them as they arise.  Andy and I sat down the other day and I asked him if he thought it was worth all the extra work (all the cleaning, sweeping the front and back of the house, dealing with squirrels, etc.) to have a big place like ours instead of an apartment.  We both agreed emphatically that it was totally worth it.  It just all feels like a little much for us right now – between all the moves, the car wreck, the upcoming delivery, settling in to the house, and the holidays and house guests coming up, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed.  Thankfully, my mom is coming to visit in a week and that should take a lot of responsibility off my shoulders, at least for a short while.

Our Thanksgiving was wonderful, though small.  We had a lot to be thankful for – living in America, being able to spend time with our families, good food on a beautiful table in a beautiful home, a healthy baby (so far) on the way.  I cooked a ton of food – turkey, green bean casserole, cranberries, creamed corn, glazed carrots, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy – so the four of us, Andy and me and George and Linda, enjoyed a large meal and plenty of leftovers.  After cooking two Thanksgivings in Dominica, cooking a feast like this in America was considerably easier and faster – despite being pregnant at the time.  My feet hurt at the end of the day and I fell asleep watching a movie that night, but it was a great meal and a lot of fun; also, I didn’t have any dishes, which I was TOTALLY thankful for.  Normally, I take pictures of big meals and place settings like that (mostly so my mom can see what a pretty table I set), but this year I didn’t.  Once the food was out of the oven and off the stove, all I could think about was eating it.  I was just too hungry to wait for a photo session, so you’ll just have to take my word for it that I made a beautifully browned turkey and set up pretty table decor.  I guess that’s what happens when the pregnant part of me takes over the rational part.  Naturally, no Thanksgiving is complete without Linda’s chocolate pie, which Andy and I devoured completely over the course of a few days… probably too few considering the size of the pie.

The pregnancy update this month is pretty boring.  I met my new doctor (a Vandy undergrad alum, too, so obviously he’s awesome) and everything and everyone is healthy.  I’m huge, of course, but not TOO huge.  I’m at that point where I’m starting to get a little uncomfortable in my body, but going to the gym and swimming has helped that.  We get another ultrasound in about a week and a half, so hopefully Riley will behave and we can get a few good pictures of him. We’re now having to deal with all the paperwork with the hospital and paying for the doctor and all that stuff, which is making the birth more real than ever.  Mostly, I try not to think about how Riley’s getting out of the womb and focus more on being healthy instead.  I’ll deal with the rest later.

My car ordeal is coming to a close as the repairs were finally finished today.  The wreck was just over 5 weeks ago, so clearly the damage was significant, plus my car had to make a trip to the Honda dealership to get a new brake switch on the pedal and reset the computer.  By the end of the week, Andy will be flying to Roanoke to pick it up and drive it back to Atlanta.  Thank heavens for his somewhat flexible schedule, without which, my car might be staying in Virginia for even longer!  We’re looking forward to having it back, as a Dodge Ram isn’t exactly a practical family car for driving around town.  Plus, since my mom arrives in a week, I didn’t want to have to put a step ladder in the back of the truck for her to use getting in and out of it.  She might say she’s “five foot three and a quarter,” but Andy and I both know she’s about 5’2″ and getting into that truck is pretty much an impossibility.  It’s starting to get to a point where even I dread getting in and out of the truck because of how high it is.

And now we’re in December.  We’ve had our Christmas decor up since we moved in and presents are already under the tree (most of them are for our nephew Dylan, though).  Mom will be here in a week to help me out with chores and readying the house for guests and just sort of being my mom again.  It’s kind of sad that I had to call her and ask her to help me clean my own house, but thankfully she likes cooking and cleaning and ironing, so at least for a week Andy will have creases in his shirts and homemade food on the table and I’ll get more help (ah, the joys of having a stay-at-home-mom – how I took that for granted in elementary school!).  Plus, we’re having a baby shower in Nashville and she wanted to be around for that.  Then right after she leaves, George and Linda arrive and then a day later, Chris, Allison, and Dylan arrive.  It will definitely be a packed house for us for Christmas, but this will probably be the most normal holiday we’ve had since 2006 and we’re so happy to be in a position to host family at our house.  Maybe when I make Christmas dinner, I’ll have Christopher pick up my camera and take a picture so the memory isn’t lost forever!

My next goal is to take some pictures of the now-completed house to show everyone what we’ve been doing for the last month.  But, if the next few weeks are anything like the previous few, I wouldn’t hold your breath for it!  As a side note, this picture is courtesy of Matt Britton Photography and our hair was styled by Crystal O’Riley at Studio Gaven.

Where We Are, Where We’ve Been, and What We’ve Done

I am finally getting around to blog updates.  Finally!  It seems like Maryland is a world away from where we are now and a lifetime ago that we were moving out of our apartment.  So much has happened since we left, so I’ll try to begin filling in the gaps, but I may forget a few things.

First, the deer accident.  After 2.5 days of packing and cleaning we left Maryland for good.  After about 4-5 hours of driving, Andy and I were in the process of passing a semi.  A deer shot out of the woods (apparently it was mating season in an out-of-control deer population in that part of rural Virginia) and ran into the right lane.  The truck driver sped up to try to hit the deer himself, knowing that the cars next to him wouldn’t fare as well, but only clipped the deer’s back end.  The deer kept running across the interstate, eventually darting behind Andy’s truck and in front of my CR-V.  I slammed on my brakes as soon as I saw her (it was a huge, mature doe), but there was no way I could stop in time.  She smashed into the front of my car, crumpling the hood and destroying the radiator (among 136 other parts) and rolled up onto my windshield, which thankfully, did not crack.  Andy got to watch the whole thing in his rear view mirror and as we both pulled over, he ran over to my car.  Miraculously, the baby and I weren’t hurt – the seatbelt didn’t leave bruises, the airbag didn’t deploy, Peanut stayed in the front seat despite not being buckled in – but it was really scary.  The next day we saw no fewer than seven deer carcasses in a 50-mile stretch of I-81, so I know I wasn’t the only one dealing with a hit-and-run mammal accident that night.  That led to a five or six day battle with Allstate to see where they’d tow the car to start repairs, what they’d pay for, etc.  $8050 worth of damage later and at least a four week stay in the repair shop in Roanoke, Andy and I are a one-car family for the time being.  I will hopefully be receiving my car back in about 2 weeks, but we’ll see how it goes.  At least we’re all safe, but that was a miserable (and expensive) way to start the move.

That led to six days in Nashville, where we visited friends and family, packed up for Atlanta, and prepared for the big move.  It was pretty amazing how many fun activities we crammed into our time in Nashville (dinner with Chris, Andrew and Tanya, a photo shoot with Meg, Matt, and Jack, hanging out with Tyler, haircuts with the best stylist in the Nashville area (or perhaps more), and a number of other excursions.  We also went to a baby shower in West Tennessee, which was a whole lot of fun.  It’s a big tradition in Andy’s family to go to the family reunion every October, but since we’ve been moving around so much we haven’t been back since 2006. One of the things that made the shower so special was that we were able to see quite a few family members at the shower who we’d missed over the last few years.  Plus it’s always nice to pay a visit to the Grandparents’.  We received a lot of wonderful and special presents, items like a handmade rocking chair for the baby, several very cute outfits, handmade burp cloths and blankets, as well as a few of the more expensive items from our registry from the parents and grandparents.  We also finally ordered Riley’s crib and changing table, so we’re on our way to having a complete nursery set up.  I’ve entered my third trimester finally and am 27.5 weeks along now, so in less than three months the little guy will be joining us.  I just switched to my new doctor in Atlanta and liked him very much, so everything is going well for the baby. My due date keeps getting bumped up earlier in February, so there’s no telling when the little man will actually show up, so I just keep saying “February.”

The move to Atlanta was a pretty smooth one – it’s only a four hour drive from Nashville, so we were at our townhouse by noon.  Again, Karen Smyth, our realtor, is the best.  She has been so helpful to us every step of the way – we could not have done this without her.  If you’re in Atlanta and need housing help, get Karen Smyth.  We were really lucky to have some friends help us move our boxes into the appropriate rooms and get all the large items into the house on that first day.  Amber and Thomas were such an enormous help to us and we were able to accomplish so much with their help.  After a few more days of unpacking, cleaning, recycling and trashing, we were well on our way to having our new home feel like home.  Andy’s parents visited us for two days and helped move more boxes and furniture and helped out with a trip to Costco and Home Depot.  Now, I would say we are about 98% of the way toward a completely settled house, which is more than some people ever achieve.  The garage is still kind of a problem, but since I don’t have a car right now, it isn’t that much of a issue.  We love our new home (the stairs are murder though, since it’s three stories) and love the neighborhood.  It’s a dramatic contrast to Maryland, which always felt congested, angry, and unsafe.  The area where we are in Atlanta feels safe and comfortable and accommodating.  Almost everything we need is just a few miles away and downtown Atlanta is only about 15-20 minutes away (or much more depending on traffic).  We’ve found new doctors, dentists, the hospital where I’ll be delivering, joined a gym, joined Costco, and changed our banking and billing addresses. There is so much involved in a major move like this, but we’re happy to say that we’re nearly settled and ready for visitors!

Needless to say, we’ve been very, very busy these last few weeks.  I keep waiting for things to slow down and they haven’t yet, but maybe in a few more weeks we’ll feel slightly more centered.  Moving is tough and we’ve done it so much it’s hard to find roots or feel at home anywhere, but Atlanta really is starting to feel like home and we can’t wait for our friends and family to come visit!

The Short Version

There has been a ton going on, but I wanted to post a VERY brief summary of our lives in the last week.   Once I catch my breath, there will probably be 3 posts about all the things that have happened, but for now, here’s the short version.

#1. We moved out of our place in Maryland.  It took a while, but in 3 days we were totally packed and moved out.

#2. We started driving around 5:30 and made it about 5 hours without incident.  Then there was a HUGE incident.  A deer ran across the interstate, clipped a trucker, darted behind Andy’s truck, and completely wrecked my car.  I’m okay, and so is the baby, but it caused about $8,000 worth of damage to my CR-V and it is now stuck in Roanoke, VA for the next 3.5 weeks.  This definitely will warrant it’s own post.

#3. We eventually made it to Nashville, spent some time with our friends and reconnected with a few, and had a baby shower thrown for us by Andy’s mom and Grandmother.  We had a really wonderful time at the shower, especially since we were able to see a lot of our family members, many of whom we haven’t seen since the last reunion we went to in 2006.  Riley got some really beautiful presents and hopefully I can put up a few pictures sometime in the near future.

#4. Then we packed and packed and packed and packed some more for Atlanta.  We arrived here on Monday around noon and have been rebuilding furniture, setting up the house, and trying to make it feel like home.  While it doesn’t really feel like we’ve accomplished much, I know we really have.  It still doesn’t quite feel like it’s ours yet, but it’s getting there.  Pictures to come!

So that’s what we’ve been up to in one incredibly busy and chaotic week!  More updates soon!

The Final Week

After much prodding, I’m finally updating the blog.  Things have just been too busy around here to find the time.  We move out of our apartment in Maryland in about a week and, unfortunately, we really haven’t started packing yet.  Over the last few weeks we’ve had to find a place to live in Atlanta, prepare for the move, sign all the contracts and pay the deposits on the new place, close out our stuff here, and figure out a time line for the move.  Thankfully, that all seems completed, so now we can focus on finishing our last week here before moving on.  Andy has one more week of his rotation and tons of work to do in that time, so he will be incredibly busy this week.  I’ve been working hard, while trying to get a handle on the packing situation (at least conceptualizing where things will go).  We’ve moved around so much by now, it seems like old hat so we aren’t stressing too much…. yet.

We couldn’t be more excited about our new townhouse in Atlanta, though.  After many evenings of looking at house, condo, and townhouse listings we narrowed our search down, in large part to our amazing realtor, Karen Smyth.  She has been so helpful to us throughout the whole process and never treated us as second-class clients because we’re renters.  She’s knowledgeable, thorough, and working with her has been a really great experience.  I couldn’t recommend her any more highly (if anyone knows someone in need of a realtor in Atlanta, I have the best one!).  Finally, we’ll have enough space to actually have “our things” back, enough space to let the cats run around, and enough space for our expanding family.  We’ll be able to have visitors again and entertain, two things we always used to do all the time but haven’t been able to in recent years.  We love the neighborhood (it’ll be nice to be in an area safe enough for me to feel comfortable running errands alone!) and we love that we’ll still be within driving distance of many of our closest friends.  We’re excited to start our time in Atlanta and actually be there for at least a year.  After looking over all the places we’ve lived in the last 7 years, Andy and I realized we’ve never been anywhere longer than 18 months (which was a really sad discovery), so staying in one place for a year is really exciting for us.

But before we can move, we have to get through this week, pack our stuff, drive to Nashville and spend a few days there, catching up with friends, packing up all of our stuff from the upstairs and the basement of Andy’s parents’ house, and attending a baby shower being thrown for us (which we’re vey much looking forward to).  I’m right about 24 weeks pregnant now, just around the corner from the third trimester.  I’m quite noticeably pregnant and it seems that the morning sickness has finally gone away.  Even my maternity clothes barely fit these days because all the weight I’ve gained has concentrated itself in front of me.  But, I’ll take it since I don’t look fat or pregnant from the back, at least.  I’m starting to get a little uncomfortable; it’s weird not being able to do things that used to be so easy, like bending over, or getting up off the ground unaided, or sleeping comfortably through the night.

And so our time in Maryland is coming to a close and I can’t say we’ll miss it all that much.  While there were some things we liked about the DC area (especially seeing Greg), Maryland is definitely not the place for us.  We’re excited to give Atlanta a try next!

Escape from Maryland: Shenandoah

Over the weekend, Andy and I took a very necessary break from the hectic, chaotic, busy, and exhausting lives we lead and escaped the big city and went to the mountains.  We drove about 2 hours away to Shenandoah National Park and stayed at their Skyland Lodge on Saturday and Sunday.  It was a breath of fresh air, literally, for us as we were able to hike, relax, read, and eat, without all the stressors that we normally have to deal with on any given weekend.  The lodge was nice – old, but remodeled, rustic, but definitely not too rustic. We booked a traditional room (bed, full bathroom, TV with about 4 channels, and all the requirements of a typical hotel room);  it also offered an amazing view of the mountains, which were starting to show hints of fall foliage.  We went on three hikes in the 24 hours we spent there, totaling around 4 miles.  The food at the lodge was also really excellent.  We had lunch and dinner there the first day and breakfast on the second.  The menu had a lot of typical Southern fare (catfish, fried chicken, brisket, biscuits and gravy) but also offered things like ribeye, Kobe beef bolognese, and pretty decent wine (not that I know this from personal experience, but this is what Andy told me).  The great thing about this lodge is that everything is well contained; we didn’t have to drive more than five minutes to get to any of the hiking trails, to the dining room, to our room, or to any of the overlooks.  We really enjoyed this trip and had a really fantastic time.  It doesn’t look like we’ll have much time to play in our last month in Maryland, so thank goodness we had the good sense to use this time to our advantage and have some fun.  Take a look at our pictures from Shenandoah below.

Another Baby Update

I hate that all my recent posts have been 100% baby related (theoretically, we’re supposed to have lives, too, right?), but between work and Andy’s rotation, just about the only thing I seem to have time to do is go to the doctor!  I already blogged about both our ultrasounds, which went really well, so the only new stuff is from my doctor’s appointment from yesterday.  This one went a bit better than the last one as I was quite a bit more vocal about asking specific questions this time, and I did not leave the office feeling unsatisfied.  I heard the heartbeat, which I had already seen was quite strong in the ultrasounds, but it was nice to actually hear his heart beating this time, instead of brainlessly yammering through it.  All my labs came back negative, which is also good, so my doctor was very pleased with how things are progressing with me and the baby.  I’m still sick 1-2 times a week, which really sucks since I’m over 20 weeks pregnant, but that’s just the way the dice fell for me, I suppose. Nevertheless, Riley and mommy are both doing well.

Andy and I have a weekend of fun planned for this weekend because we really haven’t seen each other much lately and we both just really need to get away, so we’re taking a little trip to Shenandoah in Virginia.  Hopefully, we’ll get a few nice pictures (if my camera decides to work) and can relax a little in the fresh mountain air.

More Ultrasounds
He really nuzzles right up to the placenta

Riley James - 19.5 weeks

Last week, we went into DC to get a detailed look at Riley from the radiologists (so we can give that info to my ob/gyn in Nashville when I visit on Thursday).  They checked for the presence of all his fingers and toes, heart function, kidney function, spine and bone structure, brain and head size, and a ton of other things.  Everything was present and accounted for and appeared to be in full working order, so we were very pleased about that.  Since Andy was able to go with me, we got a lot more detail than I would have if it has just been me in there.  We had both the ultrasound tech and a resident from Georgetown with us before the attending came in, so we actually got to talk to them quite a bit.  They easily confirmed (again) that Riley is a boy, so there aren’t any doubts there.  We were also able to notice that Riley, unfortunately, seems to have my chin.  I happen to hate my chin (an orthodontist once called it “underdeveloped”) so I feel kind of bad that that’s what he has ended up getting from me so far.  We could still clearly see Andy’s nose shape, but that’s about all we’ve been able to ascertain.  Riley really likes to nuzzle up against the placenta and hide, he also likes to kick me in weird places like my cervix and my bladder.  He was moving around a lot during the appointment and went from breach to transverse and back to breach, but completely turned around, by the end of the appointment.  They also measured him to be quite a bit farther along than we were first measured.  He is about 3 days older than we thought (and the weight estimation – which is notoriously off – put him over a week larger), but we’re sticking to the initial due date because first babies come late usually anyway (and I’d rather Riley be a pisces).  We’re really happy that we’ve been able to have all these ultrasounds done and be able to see so much of him already. Check out a few of the new ultrasounds here!

The rest of the weekend went by in a flash.  Andy had to work all day Saturday and was gone for more than 13 hours at the hospital.  Needless to say, I wasn’t extraordinarily motivated to do much in his absence.  Sunday is football day in the house, so the NFL was on all day long.  We have another busy week ahead of us with Andy having two back-to-back long call days and me working all week and then flying to Nashville and back on Thursday.  We only have about 5 weeks left in the DC area and haven’t even started to think about packing yet, so I’ll continue to put it off until the end of October.  With any luck, we’ll have a place to live set up in Atlanta by the middle of October, which will take another load of stress off us.  Life is always a little crazy for us and always keeping us busy.

It’s a Boy! Meet Riley James!
Meet Riley!

Meet Riley!

Well, we got the big news today and it’s a boy (our ultrasound tech knew instantly)!  His name is Riley James Herda and we’re both very, very excited.  We got quite a few pictures today in the ultrasound, despite the fact that he wasn’t really cooperating a whole lot.  He’s breach right now and hiding right behind the placenta, so he was making it really hard to get a good look at him.  However, we were able to see that he totally has Andy’s cheekbones and a similar shaped nose (although quite a bit smaller).  He keeps tucking his little chicken legs up under his chin and kicking me in the bladder, so in some of the pictures you can see his crossed legs. Some of those features don’t come across well in the pictures, but it was really clear while we were doing the 3-D ultrasound.  He looked really healthy and seemed to have all his fingers, toes, and major physiological necessities.  We’re actually getting a more detailed ultrasound next week at a radiology clinic (for all the important measurements to give to my ob/gyn), so we may even have a few new pictures at that time.  For now, you can take a look at the ultrasounds we got today and get to know Riley a little better.
