4 Months!

I can’t believe my baby is four months old!  At last weigh in he was 15 lbs, 6 ounces (60th percentile) and 27 and 1/4 inches long (a whopping 97th percentile).  He’s a big boy now and more active than ever.  He’s creeping like crazy, moving all over his crib constantly.  He’s been rolling for almost two months now, but he’s now a professional roller.  We’ll put him on his tummy to play and if he doesn’t want to do that, he’ll roll right over and smile at us.  I’ll put him on his back and he frequently vetoes that, showing us that he’d rather sleep on his side or tummy now.  Sometimes when I check him out in the video monitor, he’s in a vastly different position than I put him down in.  He plays with all his toys, grabs at things, pushes buttons, tries to grab cell phones and remotes out of our hands (to put them in his mouth, of course), etc.  He’s healthy, happy, smiley, and just a really awesome kid. Our pediatrician said he was ahead of the curve for developmental milestones, which I, of course, heartily agreed with (what parent wouldn’t?).  He also LOVES his solid food and usually smiles as soon as you put him in his high chair (because he knows what comes next).  So far he loves everything we’ve given him, including rice cereal, oatmeal, chicken, turkey, and peas.  He also tries to feed himself with the spoon and will hold his bottle by himself.  Every day I’m impressed by how much he is learning and growing.

Riley's Baptism

In addition to the four month check up, we celebrated Riley’s baptism last week.  We drove up to Nashville to welcome him into the Catholic community with our family and friends present.  Riley got to spend some time with his godparents, Greg and Erin, his grandparents, great-grandparents, and various adopted “aunts” and “uncles,” like his “Uncle” Tyler.  The ceremony, held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brentwood, felt slightly mass-produced (there were three done right after mass and it was a little impersonal), but it’s not so much about style and more about the symbolism and the meaning behind it, which was tangible.  Riley was very good during the ceremony and only got a little fussy towards the end when hunger pangs struck (as seen in this picture).  He loves water and the baptismal font was hot hot hot that day so I knew he would be fine with getting his head wet.  After the ceremony, we all went out to lunch at Mere Bulles in Brentwood and had a great meal together.   Andy and I loved being able to see our best friends and wished we didn’t have to say goodbye when we all headed off in separate directions (Greg to DC, Erin and Taylor to Knoxville, us back to Atlanta).  Nevertheless, it was a fun weekend, an important moment in Riley’s life, and a great opportunity to catch up with friends.  To see more from his baptism, click here to see the full album of pictures.

The Last Three Weeks in Pictures

There has been a lot going on in the last few weeks and a lot of pictures have been taken. From his first few meals of baby rice cereal to his first time at the park, his first visit to Vanderbilt, my first Mother’s Day, and more, here is a sampling of our lives over the last three or four weeks.

Milestones

A lot can happen in two and a half weeks, which is how long it has been since my last post.  Here in babyland, it’s an eternity.  I’ve gone back to work, celebrated my first Mother’s Day, been to Splashville… I mean Nashville and back, and that’s just me.  Riley, it would seem, has done far more than that.  Riley has swum in a pool (not by himself obviously), met his godfather and Skype’d with his godmother, been to church and blessed by the priest (though the baptism is next month), slept all the way through the night on a consistent basis, actively plays with his toys and manipulates objects (and puts them in his mouth), and stands constantly. But that’s not all…

The biggest milestone thus far was that he started eating food yesterday.  Now, I don’t want the Mommy Police to start inserting their opinions about whether or not we introduced food too quickly, so I’d prefer not to have to listen to (or read) unsolicited comments about that.  Andy and I went back and forth about this because he really seemed ready but all the literature says to wait until four months (he’s three months and a week, btw).  So we consulted the main medical database that all physicians use.  It encouraged waiting until four months, but it said that was secondary to head and neck control, the ability to sit with support, weighing at least 14 or 15 pounds, loss of the extrusion reflex, and interest in food.  All of those have been the case for a few weeks now so we decided to give it a try and see how it worked.  Everything I read said that most infants are confused by food, spit out more than they take in, don’t understand how to swallow, etc. so I thought it would be a difficult experience.  On the contrary, Riley loved the baby rice cereal, totally figured out swallowing with the spoon, and though he’s a big, messy eater, he does get most of it in his mouth.  The only thing he seems a little perplexed and frustrated about is the fact that food isn’t continuous in his mouth the way breastmilk and bottles are; he actually has to pause between spoonfuls and he doesn’t really understand or like that yet.  But we noticed a huge change even between yesterday and today with his comfort, interest, and ability to eat.  So, yes, we made the decision to feed him early, but there are no studies that can prove detrimental effects to starting solids three weeks early (though there are if you start before two months).  We’re going to stick with the baby rice cereal for a while before moving on, but still it’s exciting to see him progressing, even if it is a lot faster than I’d like.

I have a ton of pictures to upload soon, but between work and Riley and Andy and maintaining the house and everything else on my plate, it will have to wait a little while.  But take it from he, he’s pretty damn cute.

I Blame Hollywood

When I look in the mirror now, I’m starting to feel a little better about how I look.  Then I step on the scale or look at a photograph and feel completely discouraged.  Despite my best efforts, I’m still only losing a pound or (maybe) two a week.  I’m running about 4-6 miles a week (at roughly a 9 minute 40 second pace), swimming once a week, and then doing weights, pilates, or dancing two or three times a week and yet I’m not losing more than about a pound a week.  My diet is pretty good and I’m breastfeeding, so the weight is supposed to just be falling off, right?  Wrong!  Sure, I’ve now lost 37 pounds, which I guess is a good thing, but that still means I have 18 pounds more to lose to get to be where I was pre-pregnancy, which is about 10 pounds higher than I’d ultimately like to be.  Assertions abound that women lose all the weight after having a baby in the hospital, but this turns out to be mere fallacy.

I blame Hollywood for these unrealistic expectations of weight loss.  Take, for example, Kendra (that Playboy idiot) and Kourtney Kardashian.  Both gave birth in December, about 6-8 weeks before I did.  They never seemed to gain all that much weight (maybe 30 pounds) and then within six weeks of delivery were taking pictures in bikinis on the covers of major celebrity news publications.  Heidi Klum did the Victoria’s Secret fashion show seven weeks post-partum.  Other women like Nicole Richie, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Garner, and Gwyneth Paltrow seem to emerge from the hospital sans any baby weight at all.  How do they do it?  Well, the answer is simple: they can afford to.  First, they don’t gain much weight at all because they can practically pay someone to stand there and fetch them a salad whenever they want (and tell them that they aren’t really craving hamburgers and french fries when the hormones clamor for junk food).  When you can pay for a personal trainer, yoga instructor, expensive home gym, and pilates equipment, there’s no excuse to skip a workout.  When you don’t have to work 40+ hour weeks at a normal office job, you have the lifestyle flexibility to get to the gym during your pregnancy, and you can devote that spare time and energy at the end of the day to the gym.  When you have a maid, housekeeper, personal chef, business manager, personal assistant, and stylist, you have the luxury of free time, since other people spend their days doing your chores; thus, planning healthy meals and workouts is much simpler.  Then, once these women have their babies, they hide out in seclusion for six weeks with their personal trainers and a macrobiotic celebrity chef and “magically” lose the weight through breastfeeding alone, so they say.  They all say they lost it breastfeeding, but we know that’s a load of crap.  The body doesn’t make enough breastmilk for the child to survive if they’re cutting calories and over-exercising, which I would think you would have to do to lose 100% of your weight in a period of time when your physical activity is limited by doctors’ orders (there’s a reason for that six-week check up, after all).  Salma Hayek, who is one smart woman, said this to Oprah:

[My] pregnancy was really difficult for me. I thought, ‘As soon as this baby is out, I’m just going to lose all the weight superfast because I’m going to breastfeed, and everybody tells you if you breastfeed, [the weight] is going to come off.’  It’s a lie; It’s not true. I’m going to say something. Except for a couple of exceptions, the only reason people lose weight like that when they’re breastfeeding — it’s because they’re not eating and they’re breastfeeding. And this is not good for the baby.

I concur, Salma, it’s not good for the baby (nor is it good for milk supply).  So I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing, trying to feel good about how I look despite the slow results.  I can look at my super healthy, beautiful son and feel good about the choices I’ve made.  But I blame Hollywood for these unrealistic expectations of moms and how they’re supposed to look and how fast that weight is supposed to fall off.  It’s because of this that I’ve been asked half a dozen times when I’m due, despite carrying an obvious newborn around with me.  So for now, 37 pounds down, at least 18 to go, with bathing suit season just a few weeks away.

Playing with the New Camera

We just bought the new camera.  Here are some of the photos we took yesterday around the house – most of them of Riley’s smiles!

Our Trip to Nashville

Riley is now over a month old. At his one month appointment, we were astonished at how much he grew.  He went from 8 lbs 5 ounces at birth to 10 pounds 8 ounces at 1 month.  That puts him in the 75th percentile for weight!  Then he grew from 21 inches long at birth to 22 3/4 inches at 1 month, keeping him in the 90th percentile for length.  My baby is HUGE!  He’s very healthy, eating well, growing well, and meeting many of his developmental milestones several weeks ahead of schedule.  What can I say, I’m a proud mama!

Since it was Andy’s birthday last weekend (Happy 26th Birthday!), Andy decided that he wanted to make the trek up to Nashville to visit friends and family to celebrate.  We made a long, detailed packing list, determined not to forget anything, but still we forgot several things, as most parents do.  Luckily, most of them were innocuous, but it was still frustrating to think that we prepared so much and still forgot things.  I’m determined that next time we won’t forget anything!  No wonder most parents find it difficult to travel with children – the kids end up needing so much stuff that you don’t remember your own stuff!

We did all the usual things in Nashville – haircuts, lunches at Which Wich and Wolfgang Puck Express, visiting family, and then we had a few little celebrations for Andy’s birthday.  Friday night we went to Ruth’s Chris with the baby and Andy’s parents.  It was a gamble taking an infant to such a fancy restaurant; if he ended up crying and fussing would it turn into some over-told story like my parents tell stories about their dinner at the Santa Maria Inn and Andy’s parents tell stories about… everywhere they went?  Nevertheless, he slept the whole time and never made a peep.  We were able to enjoy appetizers, steak, dessert, and wine, and no one had to go out to the lobby to walk the baby around. Frankly, I had a harder time finding something to wear than taking care of the baby that night.

On Saturday, we met up with 6 of our friends at Pie in the Sky (where else would we go?) to catch up, let them meet the baby, and celebrate Andy’s birthday.  Again, Riley was very good, sleeping through most of the meal, but also being alert a little bit to meet some of his unofficial aunts and uncles.  Then Andy went downtown with friends to celebrate his and Tyler’s co-birthdays (as they almost always do), while I stayed home with the baby, who was now a little fussy.  On Sunday, Andy’s grandparents came to visit, so four generations were in the same room at the same time.  We couldn’t stay too long as we had a long drive ahead of us and Andy had to work this morning, but we still were able to spend time with everyone and enjoy our time in Nashville.  Take a look at some of the pictures from our trip and some of our pictures at home – you can see how much he’s growing!

Weight Loss Frustrations

It will officially be a month tomorrow since I gave birth to Riley. I really can’t believe it’s been four weeks already – it feels like it was just days ago that we arrived at Northside with our suitcases, ready for baby. Everything has been going well, he’s our sweet angel baby, and we head to to pediatrician tomorrow for his one month check up. We’re armed with our few questions for our doctor, but for the most part, we’ve been lucky and it’s been smooth sailing for the last month. I’m praying it will stay that way.

Right now, the priority occupying my mind (besides feeding, diapering, and taking care of the baby and Andy and the house) is weight loss. I gained 55 pounds while pregnant, which is a HUGE amount. I always told myself I’d gain no more than 30-35 pounds while pregnant, but the endless nausea left me able to eat only comfort foods and junk food (hamburgers, french fries, pizza, etc.) and made going to the gym a chore instead of fun. While I never treated pregnancy as a license to eat and always worked out at least once or twice a week, the food choices I made and the frequency of my trips to the gym were compromised. Let me add that a lot of that weight was fluid (evidenced by the major swelling and rapid weight gain in the last two weeks of pregnancy), a lot of growth in my chest, and a very big baby, so don’t think I gained 55 pounds of pure fat. In any event, that’s 55 pounds (or more) that have got to go. In the last almost four weeks, I’ve lost 30 pounds, leaving me 25 to go. I look better every day, but a lot of that “freebie” weight is gone now – the baby, the uterus, the fluid, the added blood volume – so now the weight loss has gotten harder. I’ve gone from losing five to seven pounds a week to one or two. I am determined to lose the weight quickly because I am now in an in-between stage where my maternity clothes are huge on me and my pre-pregnancy clothes are still too small. I don’t want to buy clothes that fit me now, when I still have so much weight to lose so I’ve had to become a bit more creative with my outfit choices. Nevertheless, I need to celebrate the 30 pounds lost and stay focused on the next 25. Walking up all our stairs with an almost 10 pound infant a dozen times a day does help. I’ll keep everyone posted on my weight loss and I’m sure once I hit that magic pre-pregnancy number, I’ll be shouting it from the rooftops.

Welcome, Springtime!

We are so excited that it finally is feeling like springtime around here!  We’ve been going on walks in the park, taking excursions out with the baby, and just enjoying the sunshine after what has felt like an endless winter.  We planted flowers and herbs on our back deck and finally ordered some patio furniture, the first steps to enjoying our outdoor space.  We had plans to take a trip to the zoo this weekend, but when we arrived there we quickly realized we would have to parallel park the truck about a half mile away from the zoo to actually get a space, in a not-so-nice area of town, so that brilliant idea was quickly nixed.  Instead, we went to our old standby location, the Georgia Aquarium.  Sure, it’s not a place where you can enjoy the sunshine, but we always have a good time when we go, so we figured we might as well not call the entire day a loss.  So Riley got to experience the aquarium for the first time, and though he slept through most of it, he did wake up enough to see a few fish and he seemed to like it.

He’s growing and changing constantly, smiling a little more and getting a little more head control every day.  He focuses on objects for longer periods of time and is meeting all the milestones for the first month (which is not a whole lot, granted).  Here are some new pictures of the little guy, rounding out the third week of his life.

Riley’s Second Week

Time is already flying by and we’re watching him change every day.  He learns new things every day – he’s working on grabbing things and finding his mouth.  He took his pacifier out today and put it back in by himself, something I never would have thought would get me so excited, but it did.  He’s making more faces and noises every day.  He’s hungrier than ever, but getting easier to read. As you’ll see in the pictures, he’s a big fan of his pacifier and keeping his hands up by his face, something he’s still used to from being in the womb when he constantly hid his face from us during ultrasounds.  He just had his first bath, since his umbilical stump just fell off, so we have a few pictures from that.  But he’s hungry now, so just enjoy the pictures and I’ll have to comment more later.
